I'm moving soon and I don't think i'll be renewing my cable package. I already run a DLNA home server on my PC with Serviio which is currently working great because my TV only supports a few codecs and therefore the need to transcode the majority of my files. I've started reading into building a raspberry pi and install openelec on it but I still have a hard time understanding exactly how the thing works.
From my understanding:
1) openelec is a media player
2) you can access your local downloaded content that is being shared on your local network
What I don't understand / questions I have:
1) how would this differ from my DLNA home server solution?
2) Can you "stream" shows from the add-ons? or are they downloaded? if they are downloaded, are the downloads managed by openelec? I guess the downloads aren't saved locally to the raspberry pi
3) is there live TV available? can you watch live TSN / RDS?
4) what is the breadth of available shows? I have access to a few private torrents sites with TV shows and movies, am I better off just downloading torrents and then playing from my local network? or download stuff through the add-ons?
I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge...
