Aware me on xbmc

I'm moving soon and I don't think i'll be renewing my cable package. I already run a DLNA home server on my PC with Serviio which is currently working great because my TV only supports a few codecs and therefore the need to transcode the majority of my files. I've started reading into building a raspberry pi and install openelec on it but I still have a hard time understanding exactly how the thing works.

From my understanding:
1) openelec is a media player
2) you can access your local downloaded content that is being shared on your local network

What I don't understand / questions I have:
1) how would this differ from my DLNA home server solution?
2) Can you "stream" shows from the add-ons? or are they downloaded? if they are downloaded, are the downloads managed by openelec? I guess the downloads aren't saved locally to the raspberry pi
3) is there live TV available? can you watch live TSN / RDS?
4) what is the breadth of available shows? I have access to a few private torrents sites with TV shows and movies, am I better off just downloading torrents and then playing from my local network? or download stuff through the add-ons?

I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge...

Install that ^ on your Android or Windows (or mac, look through the site, they have a few version depending on the platform) and use. It's XBMC including all the best plug-ins to stream live TV, programs and movies. Works wonders, you can add local files (USB or network) and stream them too.

Just got a pi2, i'll install openelec when I have some time and report back with some feedback.

Took me 15 mins to get the pi2 running, I had already flashed openelec on an SD card. I installed Fusion from tvaddons.org and then installed 1Channel.

Do you guys recommend any additional free add-ons? Anything with live sports content? Canadian content?

Thanks

hey guys sorry for bringing up an old post but I'm trying plex for the first time and I find the channels so limited, where or how can I install additional channels for like HBO channels and movie channels?

Not sure you can install all these on plex. You could use an already loaded version of xmbc like tvmc

1- Get TVMC latest version installed from http://www.tvaddons.ag/

2- Add the Dexter TV IPTV add-on: https://seo-michael.co.uk/tutorial-how-to-install-dexter-tv-for-kodi/

3- Integrate the iVue TV guide with Dexter (and other sources like Zeus TV or IP Stalker which does not work at this time.) https://seo-michael.co.uk/how-to-integrate-dextertv/

4- Watch whatever you want.

My favorite add-ins are 1Channel, Phoenix TV, ModBro and Online TV 3.0.

I use 1channel and genesis but I didn't know about a build of kodi with preinstalled stuff (TVMC)

DexterTV? what is it? IPTV channels??

Yes. A bit like FTA/DirecTV used to be, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. There are four "main" IPTV plug-ins available (that I know of) for Kodi:

IPTV Stalker
Dexter TV
Zeus
ModBro

IPTV was excellent but it doesn't work without a subscription anymore. The rest are go-no-go most of the time. I like how the new version of iVue (TV Guide) has integrated with whatever plug-in we want to use for IPTV.

[edit] I just noticed another IPTV plug-in called Daffy's List.
