Educate me on Safety Razors

I was passing through the mall and decided to stop and look at some safety razors since I heard great things about them. Things like a closer shave and less irritation definitely appeal to me, as well as the economical aspect of them.

I helf a long handled Merkur razor that ran for $40. Obviously I know nothing about these but I know I would prefer a longer handle and a biy of weight to it.

Any advice or opinions on this topic of particular brands to look at?

Thanks!

Maggard is probably one of the best bang for the buck. Grab this along with a good Omega Brush, some Arko soap, a blade sample pack and you're good to go!

Somewhere there is a pretty big thread on it. Because of that thread, I bought a merkur razor at Centre du rasoir. I'm never ever going back to gillette crap again.
From Westcoastshaving.com I bought

Blade Sample pack

Soap
http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Mitchells-Wool-Fat-Shaving-Soap-with-Ceramic-Bowl_p_63.html

Brush... I don't remember which one, I took a cheap one and it works.
Originally, I had bought the Speck shaving stick. It works, but the Mitchell's product is much better.

I shave twice a week. More than that and my neck is on fire. Go for it. You will spend a bit of money getting set up, but once you get going, you will not look back and it will be cheaper in the long run than the 5 for 30$ overpriced disposables.

Got into it a few weeks ago. there are a few canadian vendors, I would go to italianbarber.com. I have shaved more in the past 2 weeks then in the last year.
good prices and good selection and they are in canada. Get a sampler pack of blades, will give you a good idea which work best with your face.

I use a Muhle safety razor and badger with Proraso cream. Happy with them all.

Less irritation for sure. Im never going back to multiblades razors

Gf bought me a EJ87 Gold with a Vulfix brush

bought lots of stuff on Fendrihan, great stuff

For Proraso soaps pre/after shave i prefer giving money to a local store, Standa( St-Michel / Fleury heart of the ghetto)

Also i have lots of blades brands we could do an exchange

The beauty is that It's all about getting the proper blade for you, without spending much. Hence the purpose f a sampler pack. (if you can afford it get one with like 10 different blades)
once you find your favorite blade it'll come to 12-15c a blade if you buy 100-200 pcs instead of 30-40c each

Edit: to aswer your question, long or short handle all up to you, i actually like having both for my cheek, I actually like my dad's old Gillette from the 40s with a short handle . the rest i do with the EJ

But if ever Safety razor is too complicated to you, and takes too much time

this would be a good compromise, convenience of cartrige system and pivot, and low cost . Made by Personna USA

I recently ditched my Mach 3 and started using a Merkur 34C. Main reason for the switch was because I wanted less irritation. It seems no matter how much I try, my neck is always VERY irritated/bleeding after every shave. I lather well, don't apply pressure, and do 2 passes (1 with grain, then against). Its quite frustrating.

Any tips?

Just dont do the against the grain pass

what is this nonsense?

Just buy shaving cream for senstive skin. If you have irritation, put MORE cream, heat up the blade more, and don't apply any aftershave ever.

I have 4 times a week, I have a heavy beard.

I've been using Dollarama cheap double blade. 2$ for 10 disposable razors. Any razor works. It's how you actually use it.

lol you guys just need to learn how to shave.

Calme toi...

C'est pas tout le monde qui est fait pareil. Certain on la peau irritable, toi c'est ton tempérament qui est irritable.

1st pass with grain, re-lather, 2nd pass across grain.

I'm about to place an order on fendrihan.com
If someone need something, there's no shipping fee for order over 50$.
I'm only buying blades + some stuff...around 25-30$.
Let me know asap.

C'est surement plus économique avec un safety mais honnêtement, ça vous prend combien de temps vous raser?
