C63 + winter

So I'm seriously looking at a 2009-2010 C63 AMG as my next car but there's a few things that scare me.

1. Gas: How bad is it really? Remember I used to drive an RX-8, which I pretty bad as well. Will it get about 14L/100km if it's 70% highway?
2. Brakes: I know that the Performance pack has 2 piece front brakes, which cost a fortune to replace so I'm aiming for a non-performace pack so I can get an aftermarket LSD and tune.
3. Winter driving: This part scares me the most... Can it drive 365 a year in Montreal with good winter tires and a cool head?

Anything else I should know? I'm also looking at the B8 S4 and E90 M3, but the C63 is my go-to car...

Thanks!

I never drove a C63, but I can relate to this because of my M3 which had considerable less power. Winter driving... The big question. When I had the M3, I would always say that it's not "so bad" and a "bit fun"... I had amazing tires and I would change the rears every year (Dunlop M3 and later, Dunlop 3D, both in 255). I would rave about the car's stability, DSC and whatnot... Until I get my S5.

The truth is that I was NEVER feeling confident about the car and I would sometimes think twice about going into a parking lot to not get stuck (it happened a few times). Also, parking on the streets in Montreal can be a disaster because when the rear spins, it gets closer to the sidewalk and ca scratch. In the hills, with snow, you always hope it will not come to a complete stop, else, you may sweat... Eventually the car moves, but not so easy. On the highway, it can get snappy when cold, during snow and even after snow, when there are trails.

Now with the S5, I never looked back and I drive with confidence as the car is really predictable in snow. I did prefer the M3 to a certain extent on some occasion, but the AWD is so "everything" and you really can have fun in the winter with it as well, not as sideways as a RWD, bit still.

Back to your question; Can it be driven in winter? Yes with a "but". It's not always fun and you can't always drive it like you'd like. Kinda like a pornstar during her periods... There's ways around, but it's not 100%.

1. Yes you can, even with some spirited driving.

2. Good idea!

3. Yes & the LSD will defiantly help.

4 seasons = B8 S4 with software and exhaust. They can be had for mid 20's now and as fast as the C63 with minor mods. Just not as brutal. That being said..i do prefer the C63 for what it is.

or

C63 + Subi forester winter beater.

Fuck beaters lol

If there was a B8 S4 for mid 20s and not like 200,000 kms, I would have bought it by now lol

When you put the ad up, PM me, or I'll keep an eye out for it.

highway is like any benz V8, you'll get pretty good mileage. However if you start stomping on it all the time well.. the gas pump becomes your friend. I'd get one with the performance pack as it's a better package. The front rotors are around 1200$ with hats but you can replace them with the solid rotor :D for a fraction of the cost

Just remember this isn't an Acura 1.7EL you are maintaining and yes some stuff will cost a fortune. The nice part though is the C63 is a parts bin car.. Winter driving is fine with an LSD

Here is E90 M3 info as I discussed with Alex_666
The best way to find out if the rod bearings are going is looking for metal in the oil filter.. It might have been fixed already by BMW though. You can either change them with the engine in car or pull everything out. Hopefully the crankshaft isn't wrecked as it was in the M6. Throttle actuators will usually toss a code or you'll notice a lack of power. Rear ends are kinda garbage on those cars as well, they start to make noise. P/S pumps leak. The blower motor/resistor for the HVAC system goes as well. Another common fault is the fuel tank vent valve along with the another valve up near the charcoal canister. 2008 you might have a radio amp failure eventually, ive changed a few of them including the one when I had my 2011 328i

Whatever you get I can take a look at it.. I have Mercedes Star software and BMW dealer software to check all modules, engine over revs, engine hours etc. I'd only get a manual M3, DCT is the new SMG with issues..

So you're saying the performance pack front brakes can be replaced with the regular package brakes if needed?

I figured I'd just look for the regular model, get a Eurocharge tune and a Quaife LSD (which I hear is better than the OEM one).

Besides I'm leaning more towards S4 or C63. Never been super interested in BMWs...

driving my rwd bmw in winter isn't bad, but doesn't compare to AWD life.

you don't know what you have till it's gone.

Hello Munchy, a few things to note :

1. Gas: AMG anything will mean a lot of gas unless of course you go diesel blu tec /CDI, its just a fact of life that your will get shitty mpg, I get 15 -17 in my winter beater SUV. --> However a Merc diesel will get you pretty good mileage.

2. Brakes: I won't talk about brakes only ,but as a whole Mercedes has a reputation for having among the most expensive parts bin, but that is not the most important take away point. The real take point to note is that there is little/no aftermarket solution for Mercedes, meaning almost everything has has to Bosch/ original Mercedes, and that's annoying, for even little things which I have described below:

Oil Change
In my case you are looking at 8.5-9.5 quarts of synthetic Mobil-1 type oil plus special honeycomb cylindrical filter, 150$ plus taxes at the dealer. I tried to go to a mr. Lube / Speedy type place for an oil change as no fucking appoinment was necessary. None had the cylindrical honeycomb filter that most Merc SUV's use, (I don't know if the c class has that honestly- but for exaples sake), I ended up having to dealer. Finally Penzoil, had the equipment for it but wanted 120 ish. Maybe a AMG sedan engine is a bit smaller versus so you might get better rates ?

Brakes : You have to use Bosch (maybe now things have changed a bit) cost me 460$ for the front two! (But this is an SUV not a sedan), but you get teh gist that you will be paying out of the wazoo not matter which Merc you buy.

Lamps: Xenon headlight have to be Mercedes. I tried to get Fog lamps from Canadian Tire, they told me dealer for pete's sake ! Merc West-Isalnd told me wait four days for an appointment I got annoyed just bought the damn thing form teh parts dept, disconnected that battery at home and did it myself. And yes, 28$ plus tax for a fog lamp is highway robbery , but that is what you bargain for.

Wires and Plugs : I get detailing on even my winter beater SUV, including high pressure engine wash, and special de greaser soap. One year I noticed that my engine was knocking at red lights eventually finding out thathigh pressure water and degreaser got into one of the plugs. :-( cost well a lot .

Dealer Charges: Its a well known fact that dealerships screw you . Mercedes is no-exception, well..... actually they are . They double screw you. Here is a sampling of dealer charges I have seen : DDO : Mercedes West Island : 140$ /hour. Montreal: Silver Star : ???? If you want to vacation with car: Palm Beach Florida : Mercedes of Palm Beach ( my home dealership) : 130 USD/hour. Manhattan NYC: 145 USD/hour . (probably more now).

3. Winter Driving : While all Mercedes have traction control, the ones with AWD/ and 4-MATIC give you extreme confidence * provided you have good snow Tires I use Toyo's on mine. You seem like a practical guy worried abotu practical things. So , I think 4-matic/diesel CDI is the best for you :)
