Seven years after brother shot by police, Quebec man dies following altercation with cops

LAC-SIMON , Que. -- Two brothers from northwestern Quebec. Two eerily similar deaths.

Sandy Tarzan Michel, 25, was shot by police during an altercation on a small Algonquin reserve in Lac-Simon on Wednesday evening and later died of his injuries.

Provincial police Sgt. Benoit Coutu said officers from the Lac-Simon force were responding to reports of a man allegedly brandishing a knife as he was walking in public at about 7:30 p.m.

Michel was struck by a police cruiser and later shot several time for reasons that are still unclear.

As friends and relatives paid tribute to Michel on social media, they pointed to a tragic coincidence also highlighted in local media reports Thursday: the deceased's brother died in January 2009 after being shot by police in Lac-Simon as he allegedly held a knife.

Johnny Junior Michel Dumont was 19.

As Michel was being transported to hospital Wednesday, local police were allegedly attacked and provincial police were called in to assist.

Three people were arrested in the melee with Lac-Simon police and will appear in court in the coming days, Coutu said.

Videos posted to social media showed residents blocking the path of emergency vehicles and police imploring them to fan out and let them through.

Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux initially ordered provincial police to conduct a probe into the circumstances surrounding the shooting as it is customary for another force to investigate when someone is injured or killed during a police intervention.

However, the investigation has since been transferred to the Montreal police because members of the Lac-Simon force were in communication with provincial police the night of the shooting.

Provincial police will maintain supervision of the territory until further notice.

The union representing police officers in the community said the federal and provincial governments need to act immediately after three deaths in two months.

In February, Lac-Simon police officer Thierry Leroux was shot and killed by local resident Anthony Raymond Papatie, who then took his own life.

At least twice as many officers are needed to properly patrol the area, said Marc Ranger of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents the police force's 15 members.

Lac-Simon is about 500 kilometres northwest of Montreal.

Je ne comprends pas pourquoi les policier dans des régions plus a risque et plus sensible ne sont pas équiper de Tazer ou autre arme non létal. Avant d’abattre un homme armée d'une machette il y a surement d'autre moyen de le maîtriser et on se doit de donner les outils au force de l'ordre pour bien faire leur travaille.

Du monde en détresse il y a aucun scénario envisageable ...

Le problème est toujours le même, minorité regroupé/isolé + chômage/paresse/drogue/alcool/colle = bombe a retardement

J'dis pas ca méchamment, mais les gens devraient s'éduquer et réfléchir davantage sur le sujet avant de dire certaines choses.

- Oui, ca prend des tasers et de bons outils (à commencer par des effectifs assez nombreux) pour certaines/plusieurs situations;

- Si quelqu'un fonce sur un policier avec une machette, c'est pas le taser qu'il doit utiliser, c'est son arme à feu.

A LA on parle de monde qui sont en t shirt 9 mois sur 12. Au Canada avec les gros manteaux d'hivers, pas besoin de dire que les chances sont encore moins bonnes.

Le taser c'est le genre de truc ou ça marche bien quand les policiers sont nombreux et que les conditions le permettent. Mais quand ils sont seuls ou que la distance est très courte ils ne peuvent pas tout le temps se permettre de voir si le taser va fonctionner avant de sortir une vrai arme pour se proteger.

Sa c'est sans compter les incidents ou le taser fini par la mort qui alimentent toujours une certaine polémique par rapport à l'outil.
