In the last two weeks when the weather is "warmer" and I drive the Subaru over 15-20 minutes, after parking it I get a slight (and weird) hot glue gun smell like the hot glue guns used for school projects. Smell is not there when driving even with the windows down, although I did notice it once at one of the many useless "punishment" red lights.
Naturally because it's a Subaru the first things I checked were engine oil, prestone...
Nope: Everything is spec. Just paranoia brought on by one of the many epic MR threads about blown Subaru engines.
I realized this week-end that the smell started when I had my summer tyres installed. After further investigation I noticed that indeed the smell does come from the tyres! They're not particularly hot to the touch, in fact you can rest your hand on the wheels and it's only slightly warm but that tyre glue, some of which leaked outside the tyres when installed, does get tacky to the touch, and the smell follows on the fingers, CSI style.
So kids, if you park your car and upon going to the rear trunk for your groceries you smell a slight melting/burning plastic/rubber stench: Check your tyres, it might be the glue the garage used.
