Machinist on MR?

I believe we have a few machinist here on MR... I have a mountain bike wheel set for one of my sons that I would like to convert from a bolt-on axle to quick release. I contacted the maker of the hubs (Specialized) and tried finding replacement axles, without success. So before relacing the wheels with different hubs, I'd like to know if it's possible to modify the existing axles to accept quick release skewers. I'm no expert, but I think it should be pretty straighforward: shorten the axle by 23mm on each end and drill a 5mm hole through the axle for the quick release skewer. I believe the axle is made out of steel, but I don't know which type. I'm not too concerned with weakening the axles, considering the weight of the rider as well as the fact that the steel axles appear to be way stronger than the typical alloy axles found on quick release hubs. Here's a picture of the front steel axle next to an alloy QR axle for reference:

Is this doable? Anyone on MR that can help me with this?
