Customs questions YUL to Toronto to the states

Hi guys,

Quick question, when travelling to a US destination from YUL, but needing to do a quick layover in Toronto before going down south, at what point do you clear customs? At YUL? TO? or when you finally arrive in the states? Just want to know how early I'd need to get to the airport.

Last year i had to pick up my lugage at toronto and drop them somewhere else than pass the US custom at toronto
