2 reasons... I'm obsessed with Toyotas, I see an ae86 model for $1 and I can't leave any on the shelf. That, and in 180 years they will be worth something.

Most of Hotwheels releases are limited time only & are not produced again. A lot of people buy out the whole shelf at Walmart example, as you pay 1$ each & these things are going for 4-5$ each on ebay once production has ceased, making a nice profit for the seller. Oftentimes liveries will be market-specific, which makes overseas buyers pay a premium for N-A only editions.
I missed out on the EA CRX & EF Civic Si hatchback released last year...
