So I saw a car posted on kijiji, got interested, went to see it, agreed on the price with the seller and most likely gonna buy it sometime this week.
I thought the car belonged to the seller but he's leasing it from a dealership with 0$ residual. Which means that he pays xxx$ for xx amount of months and at the end the car is his. Buyout is 0$.
I can take over the lease but it has relatively high interest so I wanna buy it outright. I called the dealership and they said that if I buy the car, I'd have to pay the 5% sales tax on top of the 10% SAAQ tax.
Should I pay the 5% sales tax? If I'm buying from the individual, I'm not getting any sort of protection (car is out of warranty), why would I have to pay a sales tax to the dealer?
If I pay the 5% tax, does it mean that technically the dealership is selling me the car? Therefore, if something happens, a.k.a the engine blows 2 days later, I can get back to the dealership and hold them responsible right?
Thanks for your input
