Start/stop technology

hi all,

i've been seeing the new (especially) german cars, have enabled the start/stop engine technology for red lights.
is it really beneficial? i see in some cases the car stops for not even 5 seconds, the engne stops, the light goes green and needs to restart.
how bad is this for the engine?
i see it as a gizmo that in 4-5 years will start having issues and create more hassle than benefits to owners
german manufacturing have proven many times to push technologies on production cars that are not fully controlled only to fix/remove them on futuregenerations/models.
for anyne that has driven such models, do you see any lag, for restarting? if you want to unch it as soon as the light goes green?
what do you think?

J'avais un Ford a coté de moi dans le traffic de Turcot qui faisait la même affaire. J'étais en train de devenir fou entendre le starter a tout bout de champ.

Ça doit prendre des starters Heavy-Duty pour survivre à ça.
 
Il n'y a aucun lag quand tu relâche le frein. Tu n'as même pas le temps de relâcher la pédale que le moteur est en marche et la transmission embrayée. C'est vraiment instantané. ( BMW )

Mais, c'est de la marde!

Bon je m'explique:
1- Quand il fait froid, ce mode est HS
2- Quand il fait chaud, ça n'arrête pas plus que 30 secondes, car la température de l'habitacle monte en flèche
3- Avertissement dans le manuel que ça cause de l'usure prématurée sur beaucoup de pièces
4- Sur une tank d'environ 800km, ça me donnait environ 30km de plus, soit moins de 5% et ce, incluant le mode éco en conduite
5- Si le moteur arrête et tu relâches le moindrement la pédale à brake, le moteur repart et n'arrête plus avant la prochaine intersection

80% des coins de rue tu peux voir d'avance quand ça va virer vert. Tu relâche le frein une seconde avant et pas de lag.
 
I absolutely love ESS. I cross the border everyday and it helps me save quite a bit of gas. It needs some getting used.
 
what I think is amazing is that the ecu can go full sync with the crank and cam sensor within what seems to be half a rotation of crankshaft when the starter crank the engine.

Sur la golf r, Il faut le fermer à chaque fois que tu pars l'auto, tu peux pas le faire en permanence, esti que c'est gossant
 
C'est juste pour réduire la ''cote'' du véhicule et au final, la moyenne du fabricant.

Comme l'horrible M35 hybrid et tout les autres véhicules de grand luxe ''hybrid''.
 
Vu que en ce moment j'attends que la nouvelle fan de radiateur arrive chez ford ( ca passe sous la garantie ), quand chui a une lumiere je stop-start manuellement.

Pourquoi? La fan embarque seulement quand chui dans le trafic/lumiere trop longue. ca me tente pas que la fan pete pis que ca chie le rad
 
its always off for me... the only time it'll activate is in Eco Pro mode... and I only use it or turn it on in situations that I deem makes sense

-Waiting for a train to pass
-School bus with 50 Tandooris getting off
etc. etc.

Pretty rare I use it in traffic because its constant start/stop and my eye twitches when I feel the car turn on/off all the time.... I feel like I'm hurting my car, and I can't hurt her like that
