Honestly, this might be needed, sci-fi on any of the main networks is a difficult sale. It's been a very long time since they've even tried, it has to have some universal appeal to it, unlike the stuff that airs on Space/Syfy.
Yes that means diversity in the cast, also keep in mind the hardcore star trek fans are pretty intense, having female leads gives the writers more room to get away from existing arcs.
