Seattle’s $15 minimum wage has bad news for liberals

When Seattle officials voted three years ago to incrementally boost the city's minimum wage up to $15 an hour, they'd hoped to improve the lives of low-income workers. Yet according to a major new study that could force economists to reassess past research on the issue, the hike has had the opposite effect.

On the whole, the study estimates, the average low-wage worker in the city lost $125 a month because of the hike in the minimum.

That hypothesis has worrisome implications for less skilled workers. While there those with more ability might be paid more, junior workers might be losing an opportunity to work their way up. "Basically, what we’re doing is we’re removing the bottom rung of the ladder," Vigdor said.

"Experts cautioned that the effects of the minimum wage may vary according to the industries dominant in the cities where they are implemented along with overall economic conditions in the country as a whole."

Thing with studies is that despite one contradicting another. it does not make it absolute. More studies need to be conducted to pay a clearer picture.

I want a direct link to the study tho. Id love to read the hypothesis and their methods.

Moi je trouve ça bien, payé à peine moins pour une réduction des heures de 11%. Plus belle la vie.

bad news for liberals? fascist! this study is skewed! must protest against it! destroy property because it somehow helps the liberals!

the minimum wage should be $100,000 an hour. simply add 0 000 to all bills, prices, etc. everyone will be a millionaire and stop bitching.

I've heard this non stop for the last week on the radio, what they dont tell you is that all the data was taken from a very small slice of businesses, that included wage records for both in and out of state locations for those businesses, cant wait to see a full fledged properly done study as I'm on the fence about this issue.

Seattle est déja dans un boom d'emploi... le taux de chomage est de 2.7% alors ca la un effet sur l'emploi/salaire/heure... cette étude la est pas assez longue pour confirmer quoi que ce soit.

I fucking hate how media outlets never cite the academic papers they reference.

Was one of the arguments for the $15/h minimum wage more jobs? I think you'd be hard pressed to argue increasing the minimum wage in any settings wouldn't result in job losses.

People do not understand that minimum wage is not supposed to be a living wage, it is meant for students, first time in the work force, part time workers. If you earn min wage your entire life you need to up your skills, not societies fault that you can not advance, the opportunities are there. And yes, upping min wage will create job losses and drive up the cost of living, hard to find proof against that unless you assume the employer will eat the cost.

Thanks bro :victory:, I also hate how they never cite their sources. Its coz they believe the people reading their papers are too stupid to understand the study. Or maybe its the fact that journalism is basically an arts degree and they know nothing about scientific research. Anyways thanks again bud!
