If you have a 4x4 SUV, does it matter if you only change front tyres.

Hi folks,

I just wanted to know if you have a 4WD vehicle, does it matter if you only change the front 2 tyres every year?
(obviously implying taking the front tyres putting them on the back, and putting new snow tyres on the front) .
Some mechanics are acting , as if I will trigger the apocalypse, if I put 2 new tyres every year and rotate them front to back , and front new.

1. Would MR members consider TOYO a good or bad brand of tyres?
2. Which is better quality , Michelin EX-ICE , or Bridgestone Blizzak ----> IMO Blizzaks look a little more "meatier" , and compound feels the same.
 
Transfer case damage on full-time systems. The tires all need to be within X percent of eachother to prevent this. Realistically all 4 should be the same thread depth. Read the owners manual. So if you have half worn tires and install only 2 new you could damage the system. I've seen it first hand on Benz and SRT Jeeps

Toyos are fine. All higher end tires are pretty much the same
 
Why aren't you rotating front/back like a normal person? Unless for some reason you've just now gotten these tires and one pair is significantly used compared to the other, just get an entire set.
 
C’est dangereux en plus, c’est plus facile à rattraper si tu échappes le derrière que le devant.

Blizzak avant toyo. J’ai des toyo sur mon accord pis caliss je voudrais pas devoir faire de manoeuvres brusques

I am rotating my Toyos front to back. I replace all 4 on 4WD SUV usually so, I have not had this issue yet. Using this trick you are saving a lot and getting fresh fresh tyres every year.The reason I brought this up is simple. My SUV a Mercedes is now 10 years old , its in great shape, due to keeping it in the garage, detailing maintenance , but when stuff is that old, and you are paying through the nose for it, you start to grit your teeth.

I have had transmission work done this year , and all I can say is if you want to keep any car long term, ..... please please don't buy a fuckin' Mercedes. Actually don't buy German for long term (except Porsche IMO), buy Japaneese.

PS IMO, Bridgestone Blizzak > Michelin Ex-ICE. But Gregster does have a point, since he deals with performance tyres a lot. I can vouch I have seen Gregster in a purple Porsche GTS/GT3RS ( the one with the cuts near the front lights) this past summer driving down St.Charles Boulevard.

A ma job sur les awd/4x4 ont recommandé au client 3/32 max d'écart entre les pneu avant et arrière. Si ta plus que 3/32 change les 4.

Part time aussi non? Les part time ne permettent pas que le diff avant et arrière roulent à des vitesses différentes d'où le fait qu'ils sont part time. J'aurais même cru que les full time c'est ok.

T'as raison que Part-time faut pas qu'ils y aie de difference de vitesse paske tout est barré ensemble. Mais Part-time t'es pas supposé utilité ca sur une surface avec beaucoup de traction (asphalte seche). Donc vu que t'es supposé rouler seulement 4x4 en condition glissante, si y'a une difference de vitesse entre l'essieu avant et arriere paske t'es tires sont pas tous de la meme grosseur, au lieu que ca bind, les tires vont glisser. Donc c'est "moins pire".

Full-time y'a un clutch pack dans le transfer-case qui sert justement a empecher que la mecanique bind pi casse si y'a une difference de vitesse entre l'essieu avant et arriere. Sauf que en temps normal avec des tires pas mal tous de la meme grosseure, t'as une diff de vitesse juste en tournant. Si t'as des tires pas dla meme grosseur, le clutch pack va toujours glisser pi usé. Un coup trop usée, bin t'as pu de 4x4.
