the plane tickets are the most expensive. now the hotel are almost mandatory unless you go off season, because Japan has a new set of laws regarding housing rental like AirBNB.
we went for a month back in may, 3800$ for tickets ( rough prices are 2 adults -1500$ each, 1 kid -600$, 1 infant on lap -200$) 2500$ for 1 month rental of an appartment, and the rest is depending if you are a big spender (or big eater). because most of museum , castles, historic sites are free (donations) or charge ridiculous prices like 5$ (500Y).

You can do it for less but we are looking at about 15k for 2 adults. Plane tickets were about $2200 on sale, we have about $5k in hotels (19 nights) you could save here if you wanted but my girlfriend wanted bigger rooms since Japanese rooms are tiny and we prefered paying more to stay in conveniant locations. We have 3 rental cars, rail passes, rental wifi service and several activities that were pre-planned. It's a once in a life time trip for us and our first ever trip outside of Canada/usa so we were going to make the best of it.

wow, it costed you guys a lot.... it costed us 15k for 2 trips for a cumulated 2 months total, (1st trip, just me and the wife and 2nd trip for a family of 4)... we even went to Formula D at Suzuka....

I'm not sure how you managed both trips for 15k. I really don't see how we would have saved a significant amount of money and still be able to do everything that we are doing now.
$2200 plane
$2000 3x rental cars not including gas and tolls
$5000 hotels (includes a full service traditional Ryokan and a Mt.Fuji hotel)
$900 for two rail passes
We have tickets to a Sumo competition, baseball game, the Tokyo game show, Toyota automobile museum, Nissan heritage collection, R's meeting
$300 unlimited wifi box
Add all the extra's I can't think about now and food and it's going to be around the 15k range.
We are travelling from Tokyo to Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima and the Gunma area so renting an apartment wasn't so much an option.

Well, 15k$ for two months is good as fuck when you think about it...My last trip cost me close to 8k$ for two weeks lol
Again, the plane tickets are the most expensive so adding two weeks more doesn’t mean it would cost 16k$, and I would most likely have a different lifestyle on a two months trip compared to a two weeks trip, but still.

100% agreed. Personally I am good for about 1.5-2 weeks of straight vacation.. I like to break up it here and there. You can get cheap plane tickets you just need to be really flexible with dates..
My gf and I are going to Germany in 2 weeks...
Je suis allé a Disney 1 semaine avec mes 3 enfants ........ pas mal ca que ca a coûté!!!!
