Since we're going into elections, someone should pitch the idea to any of the candidate parties. I'm putting this here because I've noticed a few times already that an automotive topic is discussed here and for some mysterious reason a few days later it's on La Presse or TVA Nouvelles.... maybe we'll get lucky and it can start a debate that might make it to our "leaders."
As for right turns on red lights, allowing rolling stops in some situations would not only make commuting quicker and fluid, but also make it more eco-friendly because as we all know a start from dead stop costs more pollution than a rolling start.
Also saving on gasoline would make it economical sense.
However I can see how leaving the decision of giving or not a ticket be up to the interpretation of the policeman could lead to a multiplication of court cases. Having said that - are stop tickets not already up to the policeman's interpretation?
Essentially making a rolling stop (slow to <5km/h) legal when the following conditions are met:
-No traffic incoming or within X feet of the intersection...
-No pedestrians incoming or within X feet...
-No bicycles or motorcycles incoming or within X feet...
-Must slow to <5kph for a minimum set distance or time (i.e. for 3m or 2s - whatever - details...)
-Must be visibly able to make line of sight with the clear incoming lanes (i.e. not when there's a blockage like a fence, wall, hedge, trees, parked vehicles, etc.)
Points for or against, anyone?
