What you need to do is to face it... Take it as one small little victory at a time and congratulate yourself about facing your fear. Start with a small bridge with no traffic. Keep in mind that nothing will and nothing has happened from doing this in the past so nothing will happen. Everytime you take a detour your letting the anxiety run your life and giving it more importance than it should have. Its hard but trust me its not as hard as you belive.
Hi mtlalex, I appreciate your vote of confidence, especially coming from a senior premium member. When I booked a room on Airbnb, choosing one on the south shore was meant to force me to face my fear since I had to cross a bridge to reach it. Either that or forfeit the first night's non refundable costs, disappoint a host and risk a bad review. And you know what? When I went up the ramp to the Jacques Cartier bridge, I was anxious because I felt trapped. But as soon as the right lane was clear, I went and it was Ok.
Then this morning when leaving, I had 3 choices. I chose the JC bridge again and this time I could either cross half and bail at Ile Ste Helene, or continue to Montreal. With a 50 km/h limit, I just followed the flow of traffic and it was fine. In fact the scenery was nice too. I remember how when I was younger, I used to love driving fast over bridges and the Metropolitan. Now it's like I'm trapped but in fact you're just following a fast flowing river and it's going to be alright (queue Pet Shop Boys song...)
