Moi je coupe tu dans l'accotement parce que j'ai mal au pied parce que ma clutch est raide et que j'ai chaud dans mon char sans A/C?
Lane splitting doesn't use the side of the road. Proper lane splitting goes between lane, where a natural gap exists between the cars. There isn't room for a car in there.
Totally disagree. You are right that everyone in society is equal, and it's because anyone can go and buy a motorcycle and lane split if they want. Motorcycles, like many other vehicles, have abilities that cars don't. The fact that motorcycles are prohibited from taking advantage of those abilities is very disappointing, and it's only because car drivers are jealous. There's really no other reason. Cars are the vast majority of vehicles on the road, and they feel the need to be first in line.
A bike that lane splits properly doesn't put anyone else in danger, doesn't effect the traffic of the cars they pass, and greatly improves the comfort of the motorcycle rider. Believe me, it sucks sitting in traffic on a bike. You look around at everyone else and at least 8/10 drivers are on their phones in very slow traffic. These are the people that are anti lane splitting. Hypocrites.
Everywhere that lane splitting is legal, it works just fine. In Canada, drivers are not trained to look for it, and riders are not trained to do it properly. The result is that the riders go wayyyy too fast (should only go 5-10kmh more than the speed of traffic, and only in congested slow traffic and never in construction sites), and the drivers have heart attacks every time a bike flies by at 50kmh faster than they're going. That is actually dangerous.
What we need is to fully legalize it, to teach drivers to look for it (just need to check your mirror really...), and to have riders learn to do it properly. The result will be an incentive to use motorcycles, especially in metropolitan areas where riders can easily filter to the front of red lights and get around faster. The result will be less cars, less traffic, and more available parking.
The city of Montreal is already very bicycle friendly. Motorcycles are the closest vehicle to that. In many European countries, motorcycles are
the way to get around just for practicality reasons. It would be a slow shift, mainly because of all the geriatric drivers who can't even tell what street they're driving on. But, eventually things would improve and there would be less hostility towards riders, less congestion, more space to park all types of vehicles, and happier drivers everywhere.
