tl;dr --- Are 1st gen vipers worth buying considering how cheap they are? Same bang for your buck as the S2000?

Been looking at some and they're hilariously cheaper than I thought, basically half the price of the NSX I wanted for next year or 2020.

Are these things reliable and most importantly genuinely amazing to drive? Are repairs an arm and a leg? I don't like high maintenance cars, and I can't afford 10 grand for a clutch either. I like my S2000 a lot and it was worth every penny, but would the Viper bring even more joy or at least the same bang for your buck? I know it's a different type of car, but similar in some ways in terms of being RWD bare bones death traps with no traction control/aids.

My friend had one, 98 gts... I drive it for a road test one time... Amazing beast...

For what i remembrer he do ~2500-5000 km per year and in 8 years of ownership he never told me about costly maintance.

Gas is insane. Body repairs are insane. Maintenance is insane.

Pretty much why you can have one cheap, most of the time its not a gts.

I figured I'd probably get 200-250 km per tank which is expected. I'm aware of the body being pretty pricey especially if you damage the front, but I figured at least the mechanical part couldn't be too expensive if you leave the car bone stock. I'm wondering if this car would be more expensive than owning a mid-late 2000s Z06 too

Just by trying to compare this to a S2k, dont buy it
Yeah I know it's different but tbh I'm looking for something a little more scary and impractical than the s2000. I've never driven anything with that much torque and I just want to see how much more fun it can be. Z06s are another option if I can find a clean coupe in black, except everyone has a Corvette lol

I hated the first Gen viper flames had.

Cheap interior, shit driving position, okay look (opinion)

But in the year he had it, other then tires he didn't put a single penny on it.

Car had a tune, long tube headers and catback exhaust.

To me, the best years are 1997-2002 Vipers (Gen II) . You should buy a GTS or an ACR. You should avoid 1996 MY and Viper RTs. Compared to all the cars I have owned in my life, my 1997 Viper GTS is in my top 3 in terms of driving experience. This is a 100% testosterone car: raw, not well-mannered, poor quality finish, etc. but the driving experience is unbeatable.

Z06 2006+ 505 HP. Insane fast car. 39k $ About the same price you will find a First Gen viper.

Way better than older viper. I would get the z06 2006+

Look on kijiji you can find a 2006+ Z06 for about 35-37k$ Sometime during summer when theres deal.

Maintenance insane on a viper? It's a parts bin collection of loosely assembled 80s/90s Chrysler parts... Yea there are some specific items that are costly but the rest of it no.

Wheel hub? 150$
Spark plugs- 3.50$ each
Ignition coil- 50 each
Plug wires- 120$ from the dealer
Clutch- 400-600$

I'd say 90% of maintence items or really anything mechanical can be sourced from a local Autoparts store.

Vs let's say a 993 where doing plugs, wires and caps will be around 2000$

What's expensive? Control arms, shocks , axles...

I do remember that feeling- my leg still is sore.
