cmon this quesiton in 2018.... please. burning stuff VS using hydro....
Well, depends on your usage and installation cost.
then you can convert the energy used to $.
for heating, the smart choice still the heatpump in general.
1 cubic meter of nat gas @ 0,335$ = 35915 BTU / 0,335$ (that is for 100% efficiency, which is not the case.)
35915 BTU = 10,53 kW @ 0,0912$ = 35915 BTU / 0,960$ (electric heat = 100% efficiency.)
Let's take into account a more reasonable 80% efficiency for a base model furnace, the price goes up to 35915 BTU / 0,419$. Roughly half the price of electricity.
Now that is for nat gas VS straight electric (resistive) heat, as per your question.
A heat pump with a COP of 2.3 would cost the same to run. Bring the COP up more and it starts to be cheaper than nat gas. However, in our climate, no central heat pump will maintain such performances during the colder days, taking defrost cycles into consideration.
Those are rough calculations but you get the idea.
COP changes with outdoor temperature. In heating, it ranges from 0.9 to 2.X. The colder outside, the lower the COP. Not to be confused with capacity, as the capacity of a heat pump diminishes as the temperature drops as well. So the colder it get, the less efficient it becomes and it doesn't provide full capacity.
