2019 Spotted Thread

My father had to throw around 10k on the engine at 95k miles. He sold it for 10k more too, so not a big deal. It was a 89, I think that the late models had better seals or something like that.

And then there's all the electronics that can fail and cost a fortune.

The galvanized body is really durable, you can winter drive a 964 without rust issues in the short term.

$10k is a lot; I wonder if that has to do more with the fact that it was an '89 not a mileage-based service. Regardless, 10k in resealing seems very high.

There are no real electronics on those cars. 40$ DME relay is about the worst that fails or the immbolizer which can be by-passed
Pdas computer costs a fortune. The engine for the wing stopped working and it's like $600, but my father is decent with electric stuff so he found the right replacement part for less than $50 instead of replacing the whole unit. Also relay or corrosion problems are common on any 30 year old car, and since everything is electrically assisted it's more likely to happen on a 964 than on a Civic EF.

He also got charged 4 grands for a clutch replacement but he was in a rush for that repair since he had to tow the car asap and had no other car. It broke while I was cruising in tunnel ville marie, I luckily had enough swing to take my exit and park like nothing happened.

964 engines snap original head bolts. Which requires at minimum top end job. Parts aren't cheap, labor isn't cheapz knowledge isn't cheap.

Yea 964 C4s are a bit of an oddity. The awd system is annoying. Which is why it wasn't used later on

4k is about the going rate for a clutch

Un LS, moteur plus léger plus puissant plus fiable avec un plus beau son.

Why not?

Tant qu'à moi ya juste ça comme raison pour acheter ces voitures là : le charme du moteur air cooled. Sans ça, va acheter autre chose, ya plein de chassis moderne 2x plus performant pour la moitié du prix...

my neighbor has an 81 930 SC 3.2 euro import
he daily drives it
i borrow it every now and then
it has never needed any major service, only oil changes + small things like that
the car must have over 350.000 km by now (speedo is stuck at 183.000)
We both regularly push it hard, redline and over 150-160 easy
these cars were made to last
