Keep in mind I've work at Subaru for 2 years so I've seen the other side. Had a regular customer with a lp400 and that thing was a blast, perfectly done, except for the asking price lol. Protune is the only way to go on these cars.I don't know the reason for each individual failure that you're referencing, but the most common is that the mods installed don't align properly with OTS Cobb tune used. That in conjunction with the points I outlined earlier leads to failures. I would always suggest a protune.
Anyways, I don't have any skin in the game, as I drive a VW Golf, but i would come back to Subaru and their WRX STI without hesitation.

most of the reviews i read about the WRX say the same thing, the car pulls timing like crazy. It does not make it unreliable, but it makes the experience frustrating.
