What. A. Prick.
No kidding. I was in the car waiting to pick up my wife - then "only" my girlfriend - after her work and I saw the manager leave in a hurry and he looked like he was crying. Only found out later what had happened.
But thereafter they had two people count the cashes, the manager and one random cashier. They all got cheques to reimburse them too, was like 4-500$ in my wife's case if memory serves which was quite a bit of money back then.
Relatedly, I had a good friend when I was a kid who was a few years older than me and he worked at a depanneur and he was skimming the cash registers almost every night. He'd pretend to ring up the transaction but would cancel it before it was completed and pocketed extra money that way until he got caught on camera, made to reimburse all they could prove and obviously fired.
Also relatedly, when I was 15 my first paying job was "faire les bouteilles" at a local 7/11 and my buddies - all underage of course - used to occasionally give me 20$ for me to put a case of 24 (beer) out back for them to pick up.
If that wasn't bad enough I never put the 20$ in the cash lol... Those were the days.
