MILAN— Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Peugeot PUGOY 0.51% maker PSA Group of France have agreed on the terms of a merger that would create one of the world’s largest auto makers by volume with a market value of $48.4 billion, said people familiar with the situation.
The boards of Fiat Chrysler, Peugeot and Exor NV, the Agnelli family holding company that controls the Italian-American car maker, approved the deal on Wednesday, the people said.

Sergio had been pushing hard for a merger, any merger for a long time. The renault/nissan plan didn't go through so I guess this was plan B (or C...)
