Dems need an internal enemy to rally the troops (racism, sexism, social inequality.) Reps need an external enemy (immigrants, Mexicans, Iran, Venezualla.) Bush jr would not have won a second term without 9-11.

Or it's part of Trump's master plan to get out of NATO, start a war with Iran to go around to NATO countries/UN for support sees there is none and can say to his base look no one is coming to our aid when we needed them, so NATO is useless and we're out despite that fact that the US still remains the only country to ever invoking article 5 and the alliance members showed up when asked.

The only way this crazy escalation by the Americans makes sense is if you see it as a move to push things right up to the edge of invoking article 5, if Iran responds proportionally by killing a high-level US official or targetting a US military compound then Trump can plausibly invoke article 5, absolutely no one wants this war over nothing. NATO countries would have to choose between going to war with Iran and its proxies or effectively killing article 5 and the alliance.

If NATO countries say no to Trump's demand, he'll pull US troops from eastern europe and that effectively signals to Russia if you invade we're not coming to the defense of Baltic states.

Ca fait longtemps que je me dis ca. J'ai juste pas encore déterminé sous quel angle l'iceberg va sortir de l'eau. La Chine par son économie? L'Islam par son infiltration? La Russie par les cyberattaques?

J'ai une impression, peut-être a tort, que plusieurs joueurs s'installent, que la période tranquille d'après guerre fait maintenant place à des irritants grandissants pour chacune des nations et que la soupape va caper éventuellement.

Dans tous les cas, toutes ces petites guerres sont d'une complexité sans fin, et nous avec nos suppositions, ne sommes que des gérants d'estrade manipulés au possible.

La guerre rassemble un peuple. L'ennemi commun sert de tremplin de sympathie collective envers celui qui va mener le troupeau vers la victoire.

It's partially that but mostly because it's a distraction from domestic politics, blanketed news coverage, it would be war coverage wall to wall. No impeachment, no tax returns, no democratic primary. Just war all day. It has the added advantage of dulling the criticism of the president because politicians can't be seen as unpatriotic during war time.

Also the rallying behind the flag effect is real.

If you're cynical enough to think it's all to win reelection in 2020 then it's not the worst idea. He's shot the typical republican bullet of massive tax cuts and the returns have been nowhere near what he promised. Remember 3-6% GDP growth?

Starting a war to defend/distract from impeachment isn't the craziest thing to ever happen in American politics, I actually think it has the potential to be very effective for him.
