Modern McLaren F1 by Gordon Murray himself

McLaren at the time had a really hard time of selling even the 106 cars they built. They lost money on every single model. Legend has it that Ron Dennis was really turned off from car manufacturing for a long time because of it. BMW was contracted to build 300 engines, they built about 115 of them. I'm not sure if BMW was paid off but they were already pissed off that McLaren wanted engines per order vs in a large batch. So they would get a trickle of orders and then pay for the engines.

Most of the development work was done with Chevy engines and the BMW engine deal was late in the project. Gordon Murray already know Rosche who was head of BMM Motorsport and approached to build an engine..BMW had already somewhat developed the S70 in the M8 but it was cancelled.

The S70/2 was the worked over model and was stupid expensive to manufacture but it fit the requirements. BMW M then used the S70/3 in their own racecars in 1999-2001.
