Feds approve Air Canada takeover of Air Transat

Impensable que le gouvernement laisse ça passer... aussi bien fermer le bureau de la concurrence et arrêter de faire à semblant que quelqu'un veille à l'intérêt des citoyens.

This whole deal has been a debacle and again shows the lack of leadership from our federal government. In the absence of a comprehensive help package for the airline industry, this was a no brainer deal to approve in the current circumstances and should of been approved on an expedited basis, not at the last minute... I think deadline for the AC/TRZ deal to die is tomorrow.

Les circonstances justifient l'action.

Les routes concurentielles demeurent concurrentielles... Si Air France veut offrir Montreal - Toulouse parce qu'il reste juste un transporteur canadien qui offre la route... ils peuvent bien le faire.

The cynic in me says Air Canada is leveraging the possibility of further layoffs to get approval from the feds.

On est très a l'aise avec les oligopoles et les duopoles ici. Tant que West Jet existe on peux faire semblant que c'est un libre marché.

AC is already layoff off another 1500-2000 management positions. Well it's more a furlough

Canada doesn't have the passeneger volume to support an immense amount of carriers internally neither is it cheap operating an airline in Canada. As a country we are large, spread out and have a low population. This was a huge reason why AC built up a US, LAMCAB and EU network and uses YYZ/ YUL/ YVR as hubs for connections. US East coast such as BOS, EWR, LGA etc are cash cows. Lots of frequency and lots of close in business travel.. or was. Places like Bathurst NB are "network positive" meaning they might not make a ton of money or attract higher fare class but it feeds other flights.

Low cost carriers or ultra low cost simply don't work here. They work in heavy populated places with short distances 2-3max hour flight times, with very fast turns flying from secondary or low rung airports when possible. Lots of EasyJet and Ryanair don't even use gates at the airport because a bus/ hard stand is cheaper. We don't have really any secondary airports in Canada that can work because the fees are insane. That's with bringing up issues like Does it have a handler with correct gse, terminal etc
