different brand but I had a 2018 BMW 328d wagon and I was averaging 45-50k km/yr. The first 79k km had been 100% reliable and only went into the dealer for squeaks, rattles, and scheduled maintenance. Like you, I struggled to decide if I wanted to get the bumper to bumper extended warranty (VSC Platinum in BMW-speak) for close to 4000$ (extends factory warranty to 6 yrs/200k km). I decided my time and peace of mind was worth the money. I've raked in close to 3.5k in repairs since getting the extended warranty. Funny enough, the first one came only 3 weeks after purchasing the extended warranty for a salty 900$ for a faulty parking sensor. Sure, investing the money will yield better gains but you will never buy back the time and energy to diagnose and order the parts. Worse would be the 3rd party where you have to fight them every step along the way.
Advantage Plus isn't horrible they're pretty fair. Their top packages are fine and they payout based on coverage no issues. The problems arise based on what I posted earlier. Lack of reading comprehension and package to car value ratio. I've done timing chains, t cases etc all covered by them. Generally it works you pay for the diagnosis then whatever the deductable is and ancillary items. Based on my experience again the problems arise with lack of maintence and people expecting their warranty covers said items.^^ This ^^
They're fine if you don't defer maintence... Such as oil changes and battery replacement. We change lots of turbos because of those two issues.. yes the battery can cause turbo failureEn lisant ce thread les bmw c est des esti de vidanges qui valent la marde une fois la garantie initiale finie

$44k+txAussi combien vaut l'auto? ça aiderait à apprécier le risque.
It does. It's called after engine shutdown and the intelligent battery system And efficient dynamics Normally the coolant pump will run for 15-20 mins after shutdown to keep the turbo from cooking in its own juices. However as the battery discharges the IBS system keeps monitoring voltage to start the car. Starting the car is it's primary function. As the battery starts to get older , discharged etc that amount of time the after engine shutdown runs for gets lower and lower.Woah. I could see a link between the battery and fancy alternators / charging strategies not playing well together.... but turbos? What's the scoop? Does it have anything to do with electric coolant pumps and start/stop systems not cooling the turbos properly at times?

So factor in crappy maintence oil changes and lousy battery performance... It doesn't happen to everyone but it does happen. I have a nice pile of turbos in the corner.. scan the car it will be low boost followed by low voltage issues.
Lately we have been dealing with classic electric wastegates breaking or jamming up. Euro stuff is all over the place. It's either the car is in a great shape or has 25000kms of maintenance differed "I won't fix this oil leak" oil leaks on the belt, belt snaps and gets sucked into the engine via the crank seal. Or blows the upper rad hose.

Got to say the irony is pretty strong with this one. Having the textbook engineering solution to oil coking in the turbos after shut off and still getting it wrong somehow.
An active cooling solution should perform better than merely relying on convection after shut off, yet here we are.
Modern top shelf engine oil should be able to handle this reasonably well. I'm starting to wonder if OEMs haven't pushed the OCI intervals too far @ 16 000km and given some people a false sense of confidence.
Cars need to be driven. I'm sure the pandemic / rust / DI soot combo has not been kind to wastegate actuators.
They cover X amount of value. If you want none used parts or Branded OEM parts you'll have to pay the difference. Turbos will be rebuilt units. It's not any different than an insurance company using jobber or used parts to fix your car after a crash. Stuff like gearboxes etc will be low mileage things with a warranty. A transmission with with 40k is better than something blown up with 140k...Un peu comme les autres ont dit...

Faque j'appelle Volvo, punch mon VIN
