Passed by a "Big box" used car dealership on the weekend to check out a couple cars, specifically a 435i, S3 and S5.
Im greeted by this 21 yr old kid who tells me he's been at the place for 6 months. Tries to sell me the car by talking about performance while we walk over the to 435i. Kid starts the car and revs it to RED LINE saying hes "warming it up faster for the test drive" and so i can hear the sound. Proceeds to tell me that the great thing with new turbo cars is that they'll run just fine on 87 octane and that this cars been test driven multiple times over the past 2 weeks on 87 and that the cars been tanking it.
Meanwhile im cringing harder than Michael Scott from the office.
Is the average buyer so far removed from the realities of car ownership and maintenance that these tactics actually work?
I cant possibly be to first one to experience something like this when looking at "performance cars" at dealerships.
TL;DR Im gonna be buying my next car from a private seller most likely.
