Chevrolet Working on a mid-engine Corvette for 2017

According to Car and Driver, Chevrolet is testing the mechanics of a mid-engined Corvette. They spotted a test-mule in the form of a Holden Commodore SSV but the cab portion of the mule is from the current Corvette. Looking at the images, it does appear that they have placed the engine to the rear of the occupants.

The idea of a mid-engined Corvette has been around for a while but GM was never able to bring it to fruiting. It became more serious in 2006 and was even approved by vice chairman Bob Lutz. Unfortunately because of the collapse of the industry in 2008, that project had to be shelved – until now.

GM will continue to sell front-engine corvettes alongside whatever monster they cook up. It may not even be called a Corvette but no matter what nameplate is chosen, this is sure to be one heck of a supercar.
