In late 1997 for the 1998 model year, AMG released a new flagship for the C-Class, the C43 AMG. Unlike the C36, which was in fact a « ready-to-sell » C280 disassembled for tuning at the AMG factory, the C43 was the first AMG car to be completely assembled at the AMG plant in Affalterbach after the acquisition of AMG by Daimler-Benz in 1998. The C43 AMG can achieve a 0–100 km/h (0-60 mph) time in 5.7 seconds for the sedan version and 5.9 seconds for the wagon. The C43 was the first C-Class to be equipped with a Mercedes-Benz V8 engine. The C43 is powered by a tuned version of the 4.3-liter M113 V8 engine originally found on the W210 E430 model. After modifications this engine delivers 302 hp at 5,850 rpm and 302 lb·ft of torque at 3,250 rpm-5,000 rpm. According to Mercedes-Benz, the car can reach 155 mph (250 km/h) with electronic speed limitation and 168 mph (270 km/h) without. The Super Sprint exhaust equipped on this C43 produces a soundtrack of classic Detroit V-8 muscle car, with some expensive-sounding harmonic whines mixed in. The transmission is an AMG-modified version of the five-speed automatic gearbox found on 1998-2000 R129 SL500. Main modifications were made in order to achieve a crisper and better-adapted gearbox to higher-rpm upshifts. Also the braking system has been taken from the W210 E55 AMG. This particular C43 is equipped with upgraded 18 Inch AMG wheels, while the factory AMG suspension modifications include a 25 mm lowered body, stiffer springs, heavier damping in gas-filled shock absorbers and reinforced anti-roll bars. Outside, the C43 is styled with racy but tastefully done front and rear ground effects and side skirts. Most drivers found the C43’s stiffly padded sport seat comfortable and supportive and the rear seats are comfortable and accessible. The white counters, steering wheel and upholstery are badged AMG and this example is equipped with the beautiful two-tone leather seats and steering wheel. The front seats, trimmed in contrasting black/silver leather like the wheel, are beautiful full wrap-around sports chairs, with power adjustment and air adjustable side, base and lumbar bolsters. This C43 is from the era of incredible Mercedes build quality and finish, built to a standard, not a price. It truly stands the test of time both in design and durability. The rare C43 AMG Touring offered the best of both worlds. It offers all the performance of a high-powered V8 sport sedan with a short wheelbase and tidy, nimble size, while offering a much larger trunk to carry anything you can throw in it. With only 740 C43 AMG Tourings ever produced, this is indeed a very rare vehicle and future classic. Compact luxury high-performance V8 rear-wheel drive sport wagons just aren’t being made anymore and finding a clean, low-mileage example is exceedingly difficult. This is indeed a rare unicorn and ticks all the boxes of what you could ever want in your ideal car. What are you waiting for? Prices have just started their climb upwards, so this is the best time to buy to take advantage of the years of appreciation and joy that await you every day. Standard equipment includes the following: This is the build of this exact C43T AMG:
