Steve Dinan is one of the best known BMW tuners in the business. For over 20 years Dinan’s products built up a reputation synonymous with quality and performance. One of the most recent products to hit the market is a Stage 3 upgrade for the BMW M3 or M4 either with or without the Competition Package. According to Dinan, this modification produces some very impressive figures although you will need to add a few parts to achieve similar numbers. Power on a stock M3/M4 is increased from the factory rating of 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque to 548 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of torque. If the vehicle is equipped with the Competition Package then horsepower is bumped to 573 ponies while torque stays the same.
In either case, a new cold air intake, a high-flow exhaust system and a more efficient heat exchanger for the intercooler are required to safely extract the most performance from the 3.0-litre biturbo S55 engine. The intake and exhaust have been around awhile but the heat exchanger is an entirely new item. According to Dinan it is 66% thicker and by itself will provide gains of around 10 horsepower and 20 lb-ft of torque over the stock engine thanks to having 60% more volume and 19% more surface area than the standard BMW part. On average, water temperature will drop by 9° flowing to the intercooler across the entire power band which improves system efficiency and also allows the air from the intake to be cooled by an additional 6° compared to stock.
Reducing intake temperatures in such a manner allows a vehicle to perform more consistently and reliably when a number of launches are undertaken or during a long day at the track. Doing so while simultaneously increasing the power by above-mentioned amount makes for an all-around great package.
