So back in 2021 I purchased my 4Runner and I guess I didn't pay too much attention to the registration costs etc when I traded in my old car. But recently I got my 2022 statement and it's $454,89 lol, where in quotations theres a fee for it being a large cylinder cap car (ok this I understand), but then also a fee for Luxury vehicle.

When I was reading up on the guidelines on the SAAQ website on whats considered luxury, it's stated anything above $40,000. Does this mean anyone with a fully loaded Honda Civic is going to get hit by this also?

anything over 4.0 liter have additional cost

Additional registration fee based on cylinder capacity for the current year

On January 1, 2016, changes to the additional registration fee came into effect to reinforce the goal of reducing pollutants emitted by vehicles and greenhouse gases. This decision is the result of budget measures announced on December 2, 2014.

I mean it doesnt bother me paying 38$ for having a 4L truck, but its more the luxury tax where im like.... come on now

tell me your government is out of touch without telling me your government is out touch:
A passenger vehicle or light truck is considered a luxury vehicle if it meets the following three criteria:

it has a net weight of 3,000 kg or less
it is 7 years old or less
it is worth more than $40,000
The additional annual registration fee equals 1% of the vehicle's value exceeding $40,000.

So basically anything over a Micra or accent will have the luxury taxe...

I’d ditch displacement in favour of g/c02 and stuff that isn’t on the list gets charged a max cap.

The 40k “luxury tax” is a bit outdated now given it was put in place what 15-20 years ago? IIRC EVs under 75k are exempt from the 1%. Over that it’s a tier

The majority of not all of our registration fees are the the SAAQ indemnity fund and public transit. I’m mostly fine with it tbh

^^$75k is the threshold for EV luxury registration tax yes, versus $40k for gas. Pleasant surprise when I bought the Tesla, I was expecting $500/yr of additional fees for plates. The defender is gonna suck lol

40 000$ bien voyons donc !!!! Y'a pu beaucoup de véhicule qui coute moins que ca.

Yup this law is retarded. With inflation the threshold should be raised to what, $60k?

I can see in the future there being an environmental/social impact cost on cars. Ie something like a Mitsu Mirage that’s built in Thailand has more or an environmental cost than let’s say a Model 3 or oddly an f150 E

Social impact cost is an interesting debate.
I’d like to see a weight tax first. Imagine weight tax+ g/co2+ luxury + km usage fee hahaha I love it

that's too logical for government policies

Do you have the life cycle assessment of the mirage and the f150 E? Production of the f150 pollutes much more and the car is like 3 times de weight, which probably wears roads like 100 times faster. And the mirage doesn't get any incentive and pays taxes on gas, so I'd say it most likely pays it's fair share vs a ford f150e. And that's without considering socio-economic factors (poors can't buy EVs).
