Sprinkler system - Info needed

So I recently bought a house that has a sprinkler system and I don't know the first thing about how this stuff works. My agent just explained I should call a guy to "open" the system in the summer and again to "close" the system before the winter.

How does that work? How much (approx.) does it cost? Is it so complicated that I can't do it myself?

Thanks for your help MR

opening is simply turning it on and getting all the air out.do it one (zone)at a time b/c you will not have enough water pressure to do more than one.simply replace any broken heads or busted lines as needed.

close the system by hooking up a compressor to the main line IN.turn all zones on and get all the water out so it doesn't freeze over winter.
that's how I've done it for the last 10 yrs with only one broken head.
