So about a month ago I got a wi-fi camera kit from Amazon. The box creates its own Wi-Fi network and acts a bit like a router between my regular LAN and the cameras that came with it.
The way it works is I have my LAN, the camera PVR box connects to my LAN, it only has the one Ethernet port, the cameras are "paired" with the box at the initial setup by connecting them one by one to this Ethernet port until they sync up. I have no interface to the cameras, even if I put a laptop on the same WiFi network as them and address their IP I don't get the usual "webserver" interface to control the camera.
The issue I have is that the Wi-Fi network that box creates is weak-ass. I tested it with some Android apps like Wi-Fi analyzer and it's about 35% of the range my ASUS puts out.
This is a problem since the cameras keep disconnecting, even the one in the house not 20ft from the base is flakey. The base is centrally placed on the top floor of the house from where theoretically I should get the best range. Its antennae are not removable (they don't screw on like most.)
What do you think my options are to improve? I don't want to change the whole system, cameras are up and installed and work about 50% of the time.
I like the system interface, the cameras are actually not bad in terms of image quality and resolution, even night vision is great.
The antennae on the actual cameras do come off, they are standard screw in with the mini-cable connector.
Has anyone ever tried any of those "gain boost" wi-fi antennas like they sell on Amazon or Acces Electronique? Do they actually improve the range?
Another possibility is that through the box's interface I can customize the Wi-Fi settings. I could set up a Wi-Fi network using the same SSID and passphrase as mine, then simply pair the cameras with it and see if I can pick them up using ZoneMinder.
Still it makes no sense to me that there's no open port for the webserver in those. Sniffer for a different port maybe?
Anyone?
