Ask those car questions you were always afraid to ask

Why do diesel truck exhausts have those openings at the end or have the shape of a horn getting big?

This.

Pretty extreme exhaust temperatures is a by-product of the Diesel Exhaust Filters requirement and the regen cycle needed to keep them clean. Exhaust temperatures can reach 550c (1000 fahrenheit) to burn off the soot in the DPF in an active regen.

It's pretty wild when you monitor the EGT temperatures probes and see them quickly shooting upwards in a regen.

No one would want to walk past the tailpipe/ have the paint on their car peel off from sitting next to a diesel in regen. It could be a fire hazard in some conditions too I guess.

how possible is it to buy a car through the manufacturer rather than through the dealership? has anyone ever done this? does it really have to go through the established network of transportation, exchanges, prep, etc.? Could you not buy a brand new Canadian-spec car from Subaru Japan hot right off the press, and take care of shipping yourself?

So lets say you were a Canadian, and bought your Canadian-spec Subaru from Subaru Japan, registered it in your province before it being shipped, and obtain a Carnet de Passage for your car before it's left the country in which it was manufactured, drive it around in Japan for a little while, and then ship it to Canada yourself. Would I need to "register myself as an authorized Subaru dealer" in order to do this?

That would be like showing up to Canada Goose manufacturing site and telling them you want a Jacket. They'd tell you to fuck off cause there are 3-4 points of interest down the shipping road that all have to make money on you purchasing that jacket.
Sad truth.

In the manufacturing world, you don't question that structure - everyone has to make money.

right. everyone gets a cut in the interest of increasing availability sites. I guess I'm questioning due to "PDI & freight" charge (which honestly is a pretty reasonable cost everything considered). I just feel like there are some inefficiencies that build up costs the customer needs to eat, and of course letting people manage their own delivery isn't the solution. You do purchase your Tesla from Tesla (which I'm sure lowers its up front cost). I'm just wondering if there's a way to do that with any other car.

There is also something called brand protection.... Please tell me what benefit would you have importing your own car?

I do like the Tesla model of direct sales but let them handle transport and prep.

FYI there are only two points of entry into Canada for non north American produced cars that are bonded. Vancouver and Halifax.. once there is rail shipment or specialist transport to the dealer.

Why so some manufacturers still have the gas cap in the right side of the car? (Steering wheel on the left side)

Autre temps , autre moeurs !
