How in the world do you expect that we can settle all the contentious points we've got with the U.S in a single week? This is by definition a last ditch effort. One we haven't been involved with for weeks.
We know Cheetos in Chief is on a really tight schedule with this. The midterm elections are coming and he needs this signed by the outgoing mexican president. Doesn't leave a whole lot of leeway.
Sure, they're increasing the North American Made Content.. Meanwhile, Dum-Dum is still threatening to impose tarriff on Canadian made cars. Mexico isn't getting that rhetoric anymore. Gotta be a coincidence, right?
Doesn't sound good for expanding Canadian operations or securing products for existing facilities.
There's spin and then there's being in a good negotiating position. We clearly aren't.
How is it that we've gone from "Mexico doesn't send their best" and "we're going to build a big, beautiful wall" to "We'll, we've settled things with Mexico. Canada can go pound sand?"
If I was to write a book about this current administration, I'd probably call is thusly:
"How to spite your largest economic trading partners for maximum E-Fame and feel good vibes."
GDP is overrated. Upvotes on Reddit is where it's at.
What contentious points are left to negotiate? There seems to have been a breakthrough on the sunset clause, it's stil to be determined if it's acceptable to the canadian government.
So what's left? de minimis (which i expect Canada to compromise on) the silly niche dairy tariff trump keeps hammering on? just up the damn quota and be done with it. Canada keeps supply management, trump gets to say he got rid of the tariff, i'd be shock if he even understood what supply management is.
The only contentious point really left is arbitration settlement (between canada and the US) and government procurement (between all 3)
Dum-Dum can say whatever he wants, no one pays attention to it anymore. Remember when he was threatening to nuke the Korean peninsula? Or when he was going to withdraw from NATO? or how about how he was going to tax the shit out of Harley-Davidson for moving some production overseas?
His simplistic mind still thinks that throwing around threats is how you exert power and ultimately get what you want. What happened almost immediately after he started talking about auto tariffs? BMW announced it's boosting production in China so it doesn't have to import as many cars from it's South-Carolina plant. Good job cheeto.
He's got the attention of a goldish and only surfaces from time to time to comment on whatever he's supposed to be doing in between rounds of golf and firing tweets about crooked hillary and the witch hunt by muller.
As to how we got here? Easy the man talking doesn't actually hold any core beliefs and just babbles.
And how exactly did we spite the US? Also for how far along the negotitations have gotten I can't think of anything of significance that Canada has given up.
You know that the facts don't back your liberals are ruining the economy narative right? Still lowest unemployment rate in decades, steady job and export growth all if it with shitty oil prices too.
If you want to bash trudeau, at least do it on something where they're actually bad, like the Infrastructure Bank that's done practically nothing.
