Personally I’d put the money into an index fund
The problem with car collections is they cost money to keep around. Warehouse, maintenance, insurance, appraisals and all that stuff. But hey if you want to do it for fun and as a hobby it’s all good
A friend of mine his dad is a “collector” in UK. He’s told me that it’s not so much the car itself but the options the car has. Oddball options such as ugly wheels that nobody got, strange paint colour . Rare rarities as it was put. Also stuff that nobody thinks to collect… everyone is collecting modern Mopars… but what made orignal Mopars so valuable is they didn’t make many, the ones they did make didn’t survive and parts rarity after Chrysler auctioned the parts warehouses in the late 70s/ early 80s
It’s what’s making ITRs so collectible for example. Not many were sold in NA and not many survive and nobody thought to save them
To me these “factory” collectibles or editions are much like Ty Beanie Babies. If everyone has one it’s no longer a collectible and doesn’t make it special. But the market and speculators have made everything “collectible” not just cars.
New? I’m not sure but used MK7 GTI 2 door that’s unmolested is a good start. Porsche 968 honorable mention, E46 330i ZHP, R50 Mini Cooper S, 8th Gen Civic Si
