Hey guys,
As some of you know, I'm looking at C5 Z06 'vettes and most of the good ones are in the ol' US of A. The cars I want to buy have some of the following modifications, usually not much to worry me re: importing, but still:
- Suspension
- Oil coolers, Accusump, etc.
- Racing bucket seats + harnesses
- Non-airbag steering wheel
- Engine mods (head, cam, etc.)
- Exhaust mods (headers, x-pipe, exhaust)
- Brakes
I know almost nothing about how the import process works and the online resources suck. They tell us that the paperwork has to be at customs 72 hours prior to the car crossing the border, fees and so on but what I'm mostly interested in learning more about is the SAAQ inspection after the car has crossed the border.
I know I have 45 days to complete the inspection. I know there are a few authorized centers that do it (Canadian Tire et al.). What I don't know and can't seem to find (I guess they don't want us to be prepared, that way they can fail us and we have to pay for a second inspection) is exactly what points the inspection covers.
Aside from the speedo in km/h, daytime running lights, airbag being present, I can't find a complete checklist.
I'm sure some of you have brought their track cars over from south of the border, maybe you have some wisdom to impart? Couldn't find much useful info by searching.
If the car's A/C has been removed, do you still need to pay the A/C tax?
If crossing the border into Quebec, do you have to pay both the GST and PST? Or only GST? Do they use actual amount paid or book value of car?
Thanks!
