SAAQ « payer comme vous conduisez » GPS tracking device

The SAAQ will be testing a news system in order to improve road safety and lower insurance contributions form Quebecers. In 2016, motorists may, on a voluntary basis, to install a GPS module under the dashboard to monitor their driving habits and possibly receive discounts. Factors affecting the score will include the number of kilometers driven, excessive speeding, hard braking, rapid acceleration or poorly negotiated curves.

La Presse discusses the issue in more detail here:

Some private insurers have been offering the “pay how you drive” service for several years now. For example Industrial Alliance was the first Canadian company to offer discounts to customers who used the devices and consequently adjusted their driving habits.  Other companies have followed suit.

Nathalie Tremblay , the director of the SAAQ ,said in an interview with Le Soleil that “We think it can be a winner if we make the tool available and give the customer the choice to use it or not”.

The pilot project will be launched next year.
