Got to cash in that insurance monies! But seriously fire is the only way to get a "historic" places knocked down for condos

non,

The one in westmount at Park's restaurant was probably a kitchen fire.

The one is chinatown was almost certainly about the insurance. it's not a good lot or location for a condo development.
The one on parc today, was almost certainly for development purposes. The historical building was between the building where the fire originated and an empty lot.

It's unfortunate but protecting and restoring these old buildings is practically like charity work, it's almost impossible to find a new purpose for them or make money redeveloping them.

It's a okay location for condo IMO:

.....

Dans le pire des cas, un Hotel

You could justify it I guess.
The surrounding area isn't great
I don't know if it's still the case today but it use to hobo central around there. (Old brewery is just down the street)
Consistent construction every year.
Fire station a few hundred meters away

There's literally a holiday inn right behind it. I don't know if the area needs more hotels.
I haven't been in the area since the fire but hopefully it the spread to the clark side of the block, that would make a big enough plot of land to do something.

Problem is developers are not willing to pay for architects to come up with an intelligent plan that involve simply knocking down the building and re-using the facade in an original way with a larger building behind.

Facadism is controversial in heritage preservation circles but it's absolutely not in Montreal. Tons of example. Some nice, some mediocre.

Most of these buildings are complete piles of crap that should be knocked down. You can't save everything old... Everyone only cared about the Chinatown building only after the media reported on it. First movie theater ok? Seriously who cares... same deal with that place on Parc ave. Both were terrible on the eyes and had no hope of rescue.
