I know for sure there exists a difference between the 318i and 318iS models, and their engines: four-doors were only known as 318i, worldwide; the only 318 model to make an appearance as a coupe was the 318iS, which, apart from the 318ti, was the ONLY model in the E36 range to employ the M42.
The 318iS and 318ti got the 140bhp M42 engine, and the 318i got the M40. No exceptions, except that the 318i convertible was badged thus, but carried the M42 anyway.
As for E30 models, the only 318 to get the M42 was the 318iS, as well. All other 318i models (coupes, saloons AND convertibles, in this case) were the lesser M40 variant.
I have re-read the whole chapter on the E30 and E36, just to be absolutely sure, and am confidant this information is accurate.
bmw318I, I know you don't beleive me, but that's your perogative.
