With the vag-com you can see when the mileage doesn't match whats in the cluster. I've gone shopping for used VW's and have seen 50k to 200k differences between the ECU and what shows in the cluster.
Will the dealer bother to check or know how, who knows...

No way to know.
When you use vagcom to read milleage you actualy read the value in the cluster.
Only edc15,16 and 16+ keeps track of the milleage.
