X2, I wouldn't mind helping a Syrian family that just arrived but would not hand over any cash or check. At most, some Canadian Tire, Ikea and Walmart gift cards so it helps them settle in their new residence and get stuff necessary for day to day life.

However, I'd check their phone 1st. If they show up with anything worth over 150$, no help unless they sell and downgrade.
