Is Tesla’s Powerwall Worth It?

Electric cars are becoming more and more mainstream and 2023 promises to be yet another banner year for them.

A Powerall is a large battery for your home that kicks in when the grid fails. This is especially helpful here in Quebec with the number of outages caused by inclement weather and a monopoly on power by Hydro Quebec.

A Powerwall can be charged by the grid and store enough energy to run your home appliances for days. If you have a Tesla solar roof (or any solar panel for that matter), you could conceivably be independent from the grid.

Like many other home battery products, the Tesla Powerwall is sized for day-to-day use and often paired with a solar panel system. When your solar panels produce more electricity than you consume, you can store the excess electricity in the battery system instead of sending it back into the grid. Later, when your panels aren’t producing enough electricity to meet your home’s needs, you can use the electricity stored in your battery instead of buying it from your utility company.

What I’d like to see is a larger push for Tesla’s Powerwall and Solar roof systems to be more widely affordable. Currently a Powerwall will run you about $16,000 after installation but it only has about 13.5 kWh of storage capacity. That means it can’t run your entire home for long.

Here’s hoping that the prices of solar and batteries come down even further to allow more people to live free from grid power.
