What better way to kick off the new year than with one of the most popular platforms in the word for modifying, the BMW E30. This E30, concocted by the team at Vorshlag, was built to compete in the Grassroots Motorsports $2010 Challenge, and then went on to win the $2012 event the following year. Watch as it goes through three engine swaps and two paint-schemes, all while being cleverly modified by the Vorshlag team to be competitive while keeping under the budget limit.

Howdy from Vorshlag – looks like our little $2010 build made it onto build-threads.com? Cool!! This was two year project that we built in the garage at my house, with an all-volunteer crew, where we burned about 1500 man hours hand-making everything we couldn’t afford to just buy. After a poor showing in the 2010 event, we did better set-up testing and took it to the $2011 GRM Challenge. We won the autocross, did very well in concours, and the drag racing was rained out – all the stars lined-up perfectly and we won the whole damn event!
Pictures of the Vorshlag Team's Grassroots Motorsports $2010 Challenge project E30. The "$200X GRM Challenge" is an annual shootout among 75+ teams, where each group builds a car to compete in an event that includes: drag race, autocross and car show. The entire car has to be built for under $2010 (and each year you get +$1 more to play with). Its a great exercise in creativity, fabrication skill, chassis/engine tuning, and driving ability!

We started with a non-running $500 1986 BMW 325e, got it running, pulled the stock drivetrain, and started test fitting V8 engines. We're using 15x10" steel wheels and 275/35/15 Hoosier A6 tires, a 5.3L '04 Chevy truck "LM7" motor (iron block/alum heads, part of the LS1 family), a V6 Camaro T5 (that broke!), and built box flares to cover the tires. We ran it in the $2010 event and did "OK", tweaked it some for the $2011 event - which we won! Now the car has been prepped beyond that budget level with an aluminum "L33" 5.3L engine, new T5, 18x11" CCW wheels, AST coilovers, and more.

We were blown away, very grateful, and now we’re modifying the car beyond a GRM $20XX event’s budget. The iron block truck “LM7″ 5.3L truck motor came out and an all-aluminum “L33″ 5.3L is going in, along with a fresh T5, AST 4100 coilovers, and the 18×11″ CCW 3-piece wheels. We’re installing a 2nd seat and upgrading many other small items as well. As well as it did in the autocross competition, the car is a TERROR on a road course, where we’ll be using the car from now on. It also just turned 25 years old, so we can get a “Safety inspection” done and make it street legal in Texas. Yee-ha!

Are LSx available in Cracker Jack boxes nowadays?

Just how many effing Corvettes and GTOs have they built anyway?

I know, but in the 2010 challenge, for sure it is not a Crate engine. And these are pretty sought after engines for the prices to be up, even in junkyards...

Anyway, it seems like a lot of car for $2010! Kudos to the builders.

even for 2000$ we wont find such a clean e30 lol here.
At least this thing turns. I prefer this than 1000hp mustangs that can only can straight.

your cash rule is a lot looser compared to lemon cash rules. In lemons, that car would have been rated for 8-9000$ by officials. Cool build anyway, im pretty sure that car rips ass on the track.

There are a shit load of trucks on the road that have the same engine... Which is where they got this one from... You can have a choice from 4.8L V8, 5.3L, 6.0L,6.2L and 8.1L . What's nice about the L33 is that it's all aluminum and is DIRT cheap for an engine that makes 310hp in stock trim. You can get one for about 600-800$.

I know that aluminium SBC are quite common, but unless I'm mistaken, the plastic intake and TB shown in the BMW pic is not used on pick-up trucks, just the LSx series.

But I could be way wrong...

And those Stainless Headers must account for a large chunk of the $2010.
