I feel you.

A big reason why our infrastructure is so bad in MTL is because there simply wasn't the money in the 80s and most of the 90s to do anything. We were paying off huge loans on the Olympic Games, the city and province borrowed heavily to finance them, while still paying off metro construction, Expo 67 and more drapeau vanity projects. The late 70s and early 80s economic downturn in QC didn't help things either.

Combine deferred maintenance and renewal with no funds and shoddy original work = the mess we have now. Not to mention the social and environmental impacts projects such as the met, decarie to name a few had on the city.. poorly designed road networks completely built around cars vs future think of social needs such as "people might want to walk here or future room for expansion"
NYC, Boston, Chicago etc aren't immune either. Old legacy cities across North America all have the same issues with infrastructure. It's hard to tell voters "we need 3 billion dollars to fix the water system" when you got groups crying for more parks. Id like to see larger taxes for parking on the street, parking costs a ton of money. I wouldn't mind 200-300$ parking permits in density populated boroughs.

Which we didn't have the money for replacing it or heavy maintenance. Lots of the stuff built was tossed up very quickly (especially for Expo 67) had to finished no matter what!not quite, its simply that infra has an expiry date and with the huge booms in building everything was built at the same time, therefore everything needs to be redone at the same time....
I have zero issues paying for a parking permit if needed. The first permit would be less anyways. Road maintence for those parking spots is a huge burden on the city coffers. I don't mind taxes when it's put to good use. Montreal is putting lots of that tax money to good use for the most part.. yea some of the vanity projects are expensive. I'm not a huge fan of a 50 million dollar park but it's something I know I'll enjoy anyways no matter how much I moan. When I ride my bike across Champlain bridge or drive I enjoy knowing I helped pay for a bolt. As EVs become more common there absolutely will be either a KM based road fee or much higher regi costspay 2-300, to in the end, not get more parking, because everyone will by the permit anyways... it's a never ending vicious circle lol we're taxed enough, no need for more.
